Recently, our company successfully completed a break bulk shipment project involving large diesel generator sets from Shanghai, China to Port Kelang, Malaysia. This project represented a typical overweight and oversized project cargo operation, placing high demands on transportation organization, loading and unloading techniques, and on-site coordination.
The cargo consisted of 10 units of diesel generator sets, each weighing approximately 35 metric tons, with individual dimensions of 14.0 meters in length, 3.5 meters in width, and 3.5 meters in height. Due to the exceptional weight and over-dimensional size of each unit, the shipment was arranged via breakbulk vessel transportation, which is commonly adopted for heavy and oversized industrial equipment.
Project Challenges
1. Heavy Weight and Large Volume of Individual Units
Each generator unit featured significant weight and large volume, which imposed strict requirements on vehicle load-bearing capacity as well as lifting and handling operations.
The selection of transport vehicles, cranes, and lifting tools had to fully meet safety and technical standards to ensure stable operations throughout the entire logistics chain.
2. Oversized Dimensions and Inland Transport Constraints
With a length of 14 meters and a width and height of 3.5 meters, the cargo clearly exceeded standard road transportation limits. During inland transportation, particular attention had to be paid to road conditions, turning radii, bridge load limits, overhead clearances, and height restrictions. Any unforeseen obstacle could have affected both safety and delivery schedule.
3. Concentrated Shipment Schedule and Clear Time Nodes
All project cargo was scheduled for concentrated shipment within a clearly defined timeframe, which significantly increased the complexity of transportation organization. This required strong coordination capabilities to align inland transport, port operations, vessel loading, and on-site execution without delay.
Solutions and Project Execution
To effectively address the above challenges, our company implemented a series of targeted and professional solutions.
1. Comprehensive Site Survey and Technical Evaluation
At the early stage of the project, our project team conducted thorough on-site inspections and technical assessments, including cargo measurement verification, weight confirmation, route surveys, and port operation feasibility studies. Based on these findings, a dedicated transportation implementation plan was developed, covering inland transportation, lifting operations, breakbulk vessel loading, stowage, and lashing arrangements.
2. Rational Allocation of Heavy Transport Vehicles and Lifting Equipment
According to the cargo characteristics, suitable heavy-duty transport vehicles were deployed to ensure safe inland transportation. At the port of loading, appropriate cranes and lifting equipment were selected, and customized lifting plans were prepared to meet the specific requirements of each generator unit.
3. Optimized Transport Routes and Advance Risk Elimination
Transport routes were carefully optimized, with advance inspections conducted to identify potential height and width restrictions along the way. All overhead obstacles and narrow sections were evaluated in advance, ensuring smooth transportation from the factory to the port without interruption.
Project Highlights
1. Customized Project Transportation Solutions
Our company is capable of designing tailor-made transportation solutions to meet the specific requirements of heavy and oversized equipment, ensuring both safety and efficiency.
2. Multi-Department Coordination and Seamless Operations
Through close cooperation among multiple departments,
including transportation, port operations, and on-site supervision teams, loading, transportation, and vessel operations were smoothly connected.
3. Strict Safety Management Standards
All operations were carried out in strict accordance with safety management procedures, ensuring the safety of both cargo and personnel throughout the project execution.
Project Results
The transportation task was completed successfully, with the entire process remaining safe, controlled, and fully in line with the planned schedule. All diesel generator sets arrived at Port Klang, Malaysia in good condition. The successful completion of this project received high recognition from the client and further strengthened our company’s professional advantages in the field of heavy cargo and project logistics.
